Defenders Cap off Historic Season With Championship Win -
by ESac on October 7th, 2026
For the first time in almost a decade, the San Antonio Defenders hoist championship gold as they reign victorious in League VI.28. After a record breaking season with 123 wins in the regular season, the most in Broken Bat in 2075, the Defenders took down the Lexington Colonels in five games.
San Antonio clinched the title thanks to a dominant 11-3 victory in Game 5 with exceptional performances from Sherman Rizzo, Mike Davidson, and Ariel Borrego who were a combined 12-13 and scored six runs.
But it was right fielder Rafael Espino who was the standout in the series, as he took home the Playoffs MVP. The Puerto Rican finished the playoffs with a slash line of .455 AVG/.520 OBP/.682 SLG/1.202 OPS, with 7 runs scored, 1 home run, and 6 RBI. Espino was asked about what he contributes to his success in this series in the postgame press conference. “It took a lot to get here. I was always working with [hitting coach Chris Hanson] on hitting mechanics, not being complacent or lazy at the plate. I also wasn’t the best when we faced Lexington earlier in the season so I watched a lot of tape because we knew early that we were facing them.”
Manager Luis Aguilera radiated similar thoughts as well. “This was a long time coming. I knew we had a hungry team that has been working towards this for a while. They really wanted this. I couldn’t be prouder of the guys in this clubhouse.”
The captain, Sherman Rizzo, also had an excellent performance. After a thigh injury limited his availability the previous two games, he closed the series with a 4-4 day at the plate. “We all had to step up, myself included. I really wanted to be there in Games 3 and 4 so I knew I had to work a little harder [in] Game 5.” When asked about what to expect in the future, Rizzo replied, “We will be back here next year with the same hunger we had this season.”
The San Antonio Defenders will play next season in League V.14, a league they have plenty of history with.

Rizzo Wins 2066 Mejia Award for Team MVP -
by ESac on December 2nd, 2024
San Antonio, TX — The San Antonio Defenders organization is proud to announce that Sherman Rizzo is the 2066 Oscar Mejia Award winner, the second winner of the award. The award, named after Defenders legend Oscar Mejia, is meant to highlight the player who contributed most to the team's success in a season.
The young shortstop Rizzo had nothing short of a breakout season en route to a League Championship. Finishing 2nd in MVP voting, Rizzo's stats include a slash line of .310 AVG (8th in League V.14)/.350 OBP/.576 SLG (2nd in League V.14), 36 HR (T-3rd in League V.14), 143 RBI (1st in League V.14), 107 Runs Scored (5th in League V.14), and 14 POTG Awards (1st in League V.14).
Rizzo was presented the Oscar Mejia Award by Mejia and 1st baseman, and 2065 winner, Jose Ocampo during the 2nd annual San Antonio Defenders Foundation Players Dinner.
In his acceptance speech, the 24-year-old said, "This is something that means a lot to me. I'm blessed that I am able to contribute to such a wonderful organization."

Championship Trophy Comes Home to San Antonio -
by ESac on November 13th, 2024
San Antonio, TX — The San Antonio Defenders have won the 2066 League V.14 Championship after sweeping the Waldorf Cubs in four games.
After tying Game 4 in the 8th inning thanks to a 2-run double from catcher Milton Jin, the Defenders score three in the top of the ninth off of a 3-run homer from Playoffs MVP Hugh Willis.
San Antonio's closer Drew Strickland did enough for the save to end the playoff series with a score of 7-5.
"This game and this series is a testament to the hard work and dedication this team has put in this entire season. I'm proud of what this team has been able to accomplish." Defenders manager Luis Aguilera said on the field post-game. The young manager Aguilera won the championship in only his second season with the team after coming up short last season.
The Playoffs MVP was second baseman Hugh Willis, who went 6-14 with 3 home runs and 9 RBIs in the four game series. At the post game press conference, bottle of champagne in hand, Willis said about the achievement, "I'm just happy to be a part of this great team and lucky to have been able to contribute."
Their 23-year-old shortstop, Sherman Rizzo, who had a great performance in the series in his own right, was asked post-game about what to expect in the future. Rizzo replied, "I can't predict the future, but if our team plays like we did this season, it will very hard to stop us."
The San Antonio Defenders will play next season in League IV.7.
